COMMISSIONING OF INSTALLED 40 COMPUTERS AT THE CHS IT LAB AND REFURBISHED E-LEARNING SPACE

On 30th June, 2025, the College of Health Sciences (CHS), University of Ghana, officially commissioned a newly equipped Information Technology (IT) Laboratory and unveiled the successful conversion of the former E-learning Laboratory into modern office spaces for faculty use. The event marked a significant step in improving the College’s teaching, learning, and administrative infrastructure.

In his opening remarks, the Provost of the College, Professor Alfred Edwin Yawson, recounted his recent official visit to the Director of the Academic Affairs Directorate, during which he requested 42 desktop computers to support student learning and access to digital resources. He noted with appreciation that within less than a month, the requested computers had been mobilized and installed at the College’s IT Laboratory. He commended the Director for her swift and generous response, which has significantly enhanced digital teaching and learning capabilities within the College.

Professor Yawson further disclosed that the IT Laboratory and the adjoining Seminar Room have both been fitted with computers configured to support Sakai and other online teaching platforms. While acknowledging that many students may use their own devices, he stressed the importance of ensuring that the lab remains student-friendly and that all amenities are well maintained to guarantee their longevity and continued usefulness.

The Provost also announced the successful conversion of the former E-learning Lab into office spaces, which have now been formally handed over for official use. These newly renovated spaces will accommodate key academic and administrative units. Specifically, the Health Professions Education Unit and a Communication Unit will each be assigned dedicated office spaces. Secondly, the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology will also receive an office space. Lastly, the Research Office has been partitioned to create a more functional environment that supports research development and related activities.

Additionally, the Class of 1987 of the University of Ghana Medical School has expressed its intention to build an additional floor on the structure. The group is currently mobilizing external funding from alumni to bring this vision to fruition. Once completed, the expanded facility is expected to further improve both office accommodation and academic spaces within the College.

The commissioning of these facilities is a testament to the College's ongoing commitment to enhancing the teaching and working environment for both students and staff. These developments are expected to significantly support academic delivery, interdisciplinary collaboration, and professional productivity.
